Tajikistan, as many other countries in the world, is facing serious threats from extremism and terrorism. With the current Strategy on Countering Extremism and Terrorism in the Republic of Tajikistan for the period 2021-2025 based on the previous Strategy from 2016-2020, the Government of Tajikistan has shown resolve to pursue efforts of preventing and countering violent extremism and terrorism. The General Prosecutor’s Office has been assigned the task to coordinate the implementation of the Strategy and its Action Plan.

The Strategy is based on a comprehensive understanding of the root causes and complex repercussions of violent extremism and terrorism for state and society as a whole. Preventing and countering extremism and terrorism require contributions and a joint effort by numerous government agencies, non-governmental organizations and civil society. Therefore, the approach of the Strategy combines a whole of government with a whole of society approach.

A Secretariat has been established to enable the General Prosecutor’s Office to fulfil the task of coordinating the implementation of the Strategy and its Action Plan effectively. The task of the Secretariat  is to ensure that planning, steering, monitoring and evaluating the implementing process of the Strategy take place in a coordinated fashion among national and international government and non-governmental actors.
