On 16 June, 30 students and teachers of the Islamic Institute of Tajikistan concluded a five-day training course on the prevention and countering violent extremism and terrorist radicalization. The OSCE Programme Office in Dushanbe organized the training in Dushanbe in close co-operation with the Centre for Islamic Studies under the President of Tajikistan and the Committee on Religious Affairs and Regulation of Traditions and Rituals under the Government of Tajikistan.
Responsible behaviour of youth in the digital sphere and introduction on detecting and avoiding terrorism-related content while surfing through social media were the focus of the training. The training helped the participants to improve their critical thinking skills and knowledge about nuanced concepts of violent extremism and terrorist radicalization. In the scenario-based exercises, the participants learnt how to create narratives against the terrorist propaganda and public incitement of terrorism and violent extremism. In addition, the participants familiarized themselves with structural drivers of violent extremism and terrorism, prevention methods in the local setting and the role of youth in the prevention of VERLT.
